I was running a little late for work today…. as always. I had a choice: either take the last 5 minutes I could spare to do my makeup OR blow-dry and straighten my hair. Makeup won… obviously. With that being said, I made sure to towel dry my hair as best as I could, put a little oil in it, spritzed a bit of sea salt spray and hoped for the best. Well wouldn’t you know, I got a million compliments on my hair today (and none on my makeup- go figure.) I have a slight wave in my hair… but not the pretty, romantic type of waves you see on Victoria Secret supermodels. More like a few random, awkward kinks in my hair. But I have a secret on how to achieve the perfect, sexy beach waves you see in all the magazines.
Make sure to wash and condition with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. This gives your hair a little lift and makes it fuller for those pretty waves of yours. I personally like to use:
Towel dry your hair as much as possible then apply a tiny amount of oil to the ends of your hair. I recommend using a Moroccan oil which controls frizz, prevents split ends, and makes your hair super soft and shinny! A little goes a long way, so make sure you focus on mainly the ends, slowly working some upwards. Never apply it directly towards your scalp because it could leave you a little greasy looking- and no one wants that. I honestly would die with out my Moroccan oil… it is my #1 must have on my day-to-day routine.
Ever heard of a wet brush? Me neither, till recently! Using a wet brush is amazing at detangling your hair after a shower! They are made with super soft, flexible bristles making it easier to work through your hair, with no snagging or tugging. Especially after you apply the Moroccan oil in your hair, the brush will glide right through effortlessly!
Sea Salt Spray will be your new best friend. No, seriously. It is the ultimate key to getting that beautiful, beachy hair! Just a couple of spritzes give you a textured, tousled look while enhancing your waves to be much fuller than normal. Put your head upside down and spray a little, scrunching your hair with your hands. Flip back up and do the same again, mostly working at the ends…. and voila! You look like you just stepped off the beach!
Finish with a light mist of workable hairspray for a flexible hold. My favorite is Aveda Control Force- it doesn’t leave your hair crunchy like most hairsprays, and you can run your fingers through it while still maintaining a hold. It goes on dry and perfectly keeps those beachy waves right in place.
Lastly, I like to finish with a shine spray. It not only protects against the harsh summer sun, but also helps to repair and soften your hair, leaving your hair healthy with lots and lots of shine!
So moral of the story is you don’t need to spend an hour of your day blow-drying and straightening your hair. You can create sexy, beach waves in under 2 minutes! Embrace your beautiful, natural waves…. and take that extra time in the morning to go grab your favorite cup of Starbucks.
Stay Beautiful…. and Beachy!
