I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for this year’s From the Ground Fashion Show. The theme: Alice in Wonderland. The message: Perspective. The goal: celebrate creativity and alter the perspective of our relationship within the Rochester community.
This event is exciting for a number of reasons. The first (and perhaps most obvious) is that I’ve come to realize that anything Athi and Shawn collaborate on is going to be fabulous. Last year’s show blew me away with its runway constructed out of crushed cars. This year, “From The Ground: Perspective of Time will re-envision the High Falls parking garage into a Mad Hatter’s visual “underland” with birdcages, feathered wings, mushrooms, butterflies, towering heels, and a center tea party table runway.”
The show will be divided into three segments: Past, Present and Future. Past [including Panache and Treasure Trove Vintage] will showcase creators of up-cycled and vintage garments, Present [including Peppermint and thread] will feature local designers and boutique owners debuting next season’s trends and Future will feature one-of-a-kind avant garde fashions constructed with burlap, paper and other found materials.
If you believe in cultivating new ideas, in growth, in art, in bringing people and communities together to celebrate fashion, forward-thinking, sustainability, the creative class, and Rochester, then this is the show for you.
Last year, I explained how my support for From the Ground goes beyond sustainability and #shoplocal:
I am passionate about the underlying message of this event; by the idea that we can create a shift in our urban climate by supporting each other. That its the artists, the dreamers, the hopers and believers who take leaps of faith and make things happen. That positive outcomes are the result of blood, sweat, tears, and good people coming together.
Sometimes I feel like my head could explode thinking about all this little city of ours has to offer. There is so much talent and creative spirit here. I whole-heartedly believe that through making the right connections: by bringing together the creatives, the big thinkers, the Lennon-esque dreamers that anything is possible – that the sky alone will be the limit and no one will be able to hold us down. Changing our situations, our economy, our society starts with each one of us and with the idea and the desire to make it happen. We can be the change.
That is why I support events like this fashion show. That is why I’ll be there.
It’s why I’ll be there again this year too.
Aside from the spectacle, the fashion, and the visual splendor, From the Ground: The Perspective of Time goes beyond fashion, beyond entertainment into the realm of art as activism. In keeping with the theme of Greentopia, sustainability and eco-consciousness will undoubtedly be underlying messages, but I venture to think that this year’s perspective theme is more about social commentary than anything else. I have a feeling that we, the audience, will find ourselves falling down our own proverbial rabbit holes contemplating the way we see ourselves, our city, and our community – encouraged to shift our perspectives and facilitate growth.
