One of the things I love most about being a personal shopper (aside from that whole being paid to shop thing) is the people I get to meet and work with along the way.
A few weeks ago, I met up with my client Alyssa Whitfield and her beautiful daughter Lauryn for a personal shopping “date” at Sears. Lauryn was looking for a casual-wear look for the National American Miss New York pageant that following weekend. We tried on a bunch of outfits, narrowed it down to theses two:
She rocked it.
And she won!
Lauryn Whitfield was crowned National American Miss New York Junior Teen 2014-2015. She could have broke the bank with some high-end designer duds, but instead she enlisted her personal shopper, spent $30 at Sears and won the crown. It couldn’t have gone to a more poised and beautiful young lady. In November, Lauryn is headed to California for Nationals and plans to host a fashion/positive self image event for young girls in the Rochester area to help raise money for her expenses.
I love my job – it’s so much more than “shopping.” It’s about helping people find their personal style and make positive impressions by presenting the best version of themselves. It’s about building confidence and making my clients feel good in their own skin, giving them the permission to be noticed, and the image to go out and conquer the world.
Lauryn is such a positive role model for young girls. In addition to pageantry, she explores her culture through African dance, competes in Rochester’s only minority rowing team, and actively volunteers in our community. Her goals include attending Yale University and becoming Rochester’s youngest mayor. With her work ethic, enthusiastic spirit, and positive attitude, I’m confident that she will accomplish great things. As she said on that pageant stage: “remember the name Lauryn Whitfield” – this won’t be the last you hear of her.
